Tips for using a Bamboo Steamer
You may not own a bamboo steamer but I love mine. It’s relatively inexpensive, can easily be found at a local Asian market or online. I love always having dim sum in the freezer and then being able to steam them easily for a quick but lovely meal. It’s a really healthy and easy way of cooking. Highly recommend!
My top tip is that you don’t put the food directly on the steamer itself. You want to either line the steamer or use a dish or platter inside the steamer. For small items like dumplings or other dim sum, or the fish in this dish, line the bottom of each steamer compartment with rounds of parchment paper.
If you want more vegetables..
A lot of steamers have different containers so you could also add in baby sweetcorn, sugar snap peas, edamame, broccoli, whatever you like, if you want to up the greenery. I wouldn’t add any more than the pakchoi to the compartment with the fish as you don’t want to overcrowd and overwhelm.
How do you tell if steamed fish is cooked?
Simply poke it gently with a fork into the thickest part of the fish and if the flesh flakes off easily and the colour is solidly white and no longer translucent then the fish is cooked.
How long should I steam my fish?
Around 5-7 minutes! But honestly it depends on the thickness of the fish so you do need to check it and see how it’s doing,
Which is the best fish for steaming?
Cod, seabass or even salmon will work perfectly here.
What to add to the finished dish?
I really love it with a drizzle of soy sauce and chilli oil, as written in the recipe. But a little sesame oil would also be nice drizzled on the top. You could make a little sesame oil, honey and soy dressing and drizzle that on the top too. Yum.
