Step 1
Make the meatballs. Put the turkey/chicken mince, cottage cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, finely grated garlic, dried oregano, lightly crushed fennel seeds, if using, finely grated Parmesan and a generous amount of salt and black pepper into a bowl. Mix with your hands until everything is evenly combined, taking care not to overwork the mixture as this can make the meatballs dense.
500 g Turkey or chicken mince
2 tbsp Cottage cheese
60 g Fresh breadcrumbs
1 Egg
1-2 Garlic cloves
1 tsp Dried oregano
1 tsp Fennel seeds
30 g Parmesan
Salt
Black pepper
Step 2
Roll into 15-20 meatballs. Arrange the meatballs on a lightly oiled baking tray and bake at 200C for about 8 minutes, until lightly browned and firm. They don’t need to be cooked through at this stage as they’ll finish cooking in the sauce.
Step 3
Make the Sauce. Add the olive oil to a large pan, then add the finely chopped onion. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, until softened. Add the finely grated garlic and cook for another minute.
1 Onion
2 Garlic cloves
1 tbsp Olive oil
Step 4
Add the chopped tomatoes and brown sugar. Season generously with salt and black pepper, then simmer for 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
2 Tins chopped tomatoes
1 tsp Brown sugar
Salt
Black pepper
Step 5
Gently nestle the meatballs into the tomato sauce. If needed, add up to 120ml/1/2 cup water to loosen the sauce and make sure the meatballs are partially submerged. Cover and simmer gently for 8–10 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through. Remove from the heat, cover, and leave the meatballs in the warm sauce until you’re ready to serve. They’ll sit happily in the sauce while you get everything else together.
120 ml Water
Step 6
Tear the handful of fresh basil over the meatballs and tomato sauce, then finish with a generous shower of grated Parmesan. Serve over buttery rice or spaghetti.

Feeding children: These are usually popular with children. The cottage cheese keeps the meatballs lovely and soft, and the tomato sauce is mild and slightly sweet. My girls love these with spaghetti!
Make ahead: You can shape the meatballs up to a day ahead and keep them covered in the fridge until you’re ready to cook them. The tomato sauce can also be made ahead and reheated gently in a pan.
Cooking the meatballs: If you’d rather not fry the meatballs, arrange them on a lined baking tray and bake at 200C for about 8 minutes, until lightly browned and firm. Transfer them to the tomato sauce and simmer until cooked through.
Freezer-friendly: The cooked meatballs and sauce freeze really well together. I recommend making the full recipe even if you’re a smaller household and then you have an easy dinner for another night. Cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container. Defrost in the fridge then reheat gently until piping hot.
Serving suggestions: I personally love these with buttered rice, but pasta or spaghetti are wonderful too. Garlic bread is also excellent for mopping up all that lovely tomato sauce.
Cottage cheese: You only need a couple of tablespoons for these meatballs, so use up the rest in these loaded sweet potatoes. Or I love cottage cheese, tuna, a little mayo and some jalapeño tabasco as a filling for a pita for an easy lunch. You can also swap in the same amount of ricotta for the cottage cheese in the meatballs if you prefer.

Definitely one that went down well with the fam! Nice to use Turkey mince. I've never cooked with that before.
